2023 SCHOLARSHIP APPLICATION AND ESSAY CONTEST
The New Jersey Medical Association is inviting NJ students in high school, college and medical school to apply for 2023 scholarship celebrating the future of medicine based on categories below.
The NJMA locally wants socially and professionally connect physicians of color to discuss and act on issues that matter most to members. The organization’s members want to battle health care disparities thru advocacy, education and service to community. This Scholarship specifically aims to encourage and elevate students interested in medicine but additionally to create opportunities for sustained intergenerational mentorship between African- American students and African American physicians.

Scholarship and Networking Banquet
April 26, 2023
6:30 - 9:30 pm at the Newark Museum, Newark, NJ
Students must attend to receive a monetary prize
APPLICATION
All applicants must submit application and essay no later than March 17th, 2023

Monetary award: $ 500.00
Candidate must be NJ resident
Topic of Essay:
What solutions would you propose to address health disparities that are seen in communities of color in one of these areas: childhood asthma, obesity or mental health.
Or
How can educators better promote STEM Careers (including but not limited to: careers in medicine, dentistry, veterinary medicine, actuary science, physical, occupational, and speech therapy) among Black and Latinx and other under-represented populations?

Monetary award: $ 750.00
Candidate must be a NJ resident.
Topic:
What solutions would you propose to address reducing stigma surrounding mental health issues and addressing existing disparities that are seen in communities of color?
The essay should also indicate the candidate is interested in medicine, science and/or medical research and answer the essay question.

Monetary award: $ 1000.00
Candidates should be a member of the student National Medical Association,
Matriculated in one of NJ four medical schools and
Write an essay on the topic:
Data shows that healthcare disparities can be improved when the primary healthcare providers are similar / culturally congruent to their patient populations. Discuss the barriers that prevent minority students from entering primary care specialties. Discuss solutions to increase representation of minority primary care providers.
Recipients will be notified by April 10th, 2023.
All applicants will be notified and are invited to attend the in-person Scholarship / Networking Banquet. All scholarship recipients must attend event in order to receive monetary award and consent to be photographed for social media postings.
